1961 Siran, Margaux,
Bordeaux, France
1961 Siran: We enjoyed this 1961 Siran with a good friend of mine for his 40th birthday. I had never tasted this wine previously and was curious to experiment how the little "less" renowned châteaux are doing in this legendary
1961
vintage. I wasn't quite sure if Siran was fit enough for
decanting so I opened it 30mn before dinner (with some problems pulling out the cork). After smelling and tasting it I decided to decant the wine only shortly
before the service.
The colour was a bit
light, slightly rusty, not extremely appealing but this may eventually have to do with the poor cork. Nice
delicate smell - wet earth, moss,
ripe plums, not very long but
elegant
nose. This Siran was very
round with a dominant
taste of liquorice, slightly acid at the end.
Not very long nor
powerful.
If I had a second bottle of this wine, I would try it because I wonder what can really be the wine's potential with a decent cork. Anyway this bottle was fully mature. Possibly it may have been wiser to drink
this 1961 Siran a few years ago.
