Tasting notes on Chateau Pape Clément - Pessac Leognan Graves

Graves Classifications - Pape Clement - Crus Classes, Pessac Leognan Graves Region The Historical Classification of Graves (1959), CC, GC

> 1990 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

1990 Pape Clement: I was slightly disappointed.... The colour is very intense, youthful compared to the previous wines of the tasting. Aromatic floral nose with almonds and nuts scents. In mouth, the wine appears to be very accomplished with rounded tannins and ripe fruits, not very powerful though (a bit short in mouth). A 1990 Pape Clement which is relatively close in style to a right bank wine. Seems almost ready to drink now! 88/100

> 1995 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

1995 Château Pape-Clément: very deep red. Fresh fruit, raspberry, smoky. Concentrated tannins, pulpy, fat, very long. Should age for long. 90/100

> 2000 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

2000 Pape Clement: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon - 40% Merlot
Glorious colour. Scents of ripe sunny fruits, tobacco. Slight alcoholic hint which dissipates quickly. The attack is a model of its kind - progressive, harmonious and persistent, marked by the very soft tannins of this 2000 Pape Clement. Magnificent depth balanced by an interesting minerality. Surprising difference between the nose and the palate, wich has a great accuracy and remarkable freshness. This 2000 Pape Clement will certainly join the estate's hall of fame. 2000 Pape-Clément may be considered as a reference point among the past successes from Pape Clement. In terms of quality, this growth is getting close to  the levels of La Mission Haut-Brion. 94/100

> 2001 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

2001 Pape Clement : dark ruby red to purple. 2001 Pape Clement has an explosive fruit, blackcurrant, wild strawberry, raspberry, a little bit earthy and still marked by wood. Exhuberant palate, phenomenal volume coupled with a tight texture and an exceptional fruit purity. 2001 Pape Clement has a splendid minerality on which the soil leaves a beautiful print. A Pape Clement entirely carried by its fruit. This is the result of a rigorous picking process done at the time of the harvest. A Pape Clement for hedonists and probably one of the best price to quality deals for the 2001 vintage. 91/100

> 2002 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

2002 Pape Clement: the color of the 2002 Pape Clement is dark ruby. Beautiful floral nose, cedar wood, blackcurrant, vanilla and black chocolate. Very sharp on the palate with an elegant balanced roundness. 2002 Pape Clement has a dense body and very expressive finish with a beautiful width. 2002 Pape Clement is quite a flattering wine. 91/100

> 2003 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

2003 Pape Clement: dark and opaque red colour. 2003 Pape Clement smells like chocolate, ripe cherries, intense and creamy red fruits, pencil shavings and eucalyptus. The flavor of 2003 Pape Clement is incredibly concentrated and delicious, well balanced in spite of persistent tannins. It just oozes around your mouth! No doubt 2003 Pape Clement will be extremely popular among the aficionados for ripe and tasty wines. Tasted together with 03 Haut-Brion, the difference in style between the First Growth and 2003 Pape Clement is particularly striking this year. 93/100

> 2004 Pape Clement - Pessac Léognan Graves, Bordeaux, France

06/2007 - Beautiful deep dark color. Elegant bouquet of red fruit, redcurrant, and roasted aromas with an underlying richness that is unfortunately somewhat spoiled by an impression of TCA.
Despite the problem that seems to affect this particular bottle, I find that 2004 Pape Clément has plenty of volume and a solid, forthright structure, although almost to the point where it lacks personality. There is plenty of juicy fruit on the palate, but also significant oak. Was barrel ageing overly ambitious this year? This experience calls for tasting another sample.
