Situation and soil
about Haut-Medoc area
Haut-Médoc has been separated from
Medoc's appellation since
1936. Haut-Medoc is a vast area of almost 4000 ha which covers the central and southern part of the
Médoc peninsula. Haut-Médoc represents a cultivated surface of approximately one third of the Left Bank's total
vineyard. Six other appellations including
Margaux,
Pauillac,
Saint-Julien and
Saint-Estephe are enclaved in the district's centre.
They produce the most prestigious wines of the Left Bank. The diversity of its soils makes Haut-Médoc a representative example of the diversity of the greater
Médoc's
terroirs.
